Happy Birthday Superdrug! #superdrug50

Hi!

This year one of the champions of the British high street, Superdrug, turns 50! To celebrate lots of iconic brands sold at the store have released special limited edition birthday products, and when I saw Barry M's offering I had to grab it. A pink gelly base (reminiscent of their iconic pink carrier bags, perhaps?) stuffed to the brim full of sparkly goodness, I was utterly wowed when swatches started appearing and when I got it on my nails it just got better. I thought it would be a mare to apply, being so glitter packed, but in fact two easy coats, no dabbing or glitter manipulation needed and a generous topcoat and perfection. I paired it with Barry M Rose Hip Gelly and some stamped roses.

Have you picked up any of the special Superdrug 50th Birthday edition products? There are offerings from Revlon, Sleek, Olay, GOSH and loads more! I think it's great that in the tough financial climate we're in, with so many high street names closing down or going broke (RIP Barratts shoes!) we have something to celebrate! I couldn't imagine a high street without it, so Happy Birthday Superdrug, here's to 50 more years!

Off-Topic Tuesday - Budget Beauty Buys worth trying!

Although this is prominently a nail blog, I'm a closet beauty junkie too. There's no way in a million years I'll ever get through all of my make-up, but I still buy more and more. And when it comes to spending, I want more for my money! But to get the quantity you don't always have to scrimp on quality, so I thought I'd share a few of the budget friendly products I use every day and love. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a collection of MAC lippies and Urban Decay palettes, but when I can get a whole make-up bag full of goodies for the price of one higher end one, I know which I'd rather have!

MUA

I seem to have amassed quite an array of MUA products, both from their main £1 range and the slightly pricier pro range. It started off with a single eye shadow (Shade 1 pearl, not pictured because my three year old smashed it...) which I loved so much as an eye shadow and highlighter, and moved on from there. Several of the products I use everyday and will repurchase over and over - the pressed powder and clear mascara for my brows are used every single day. I love all the palettes as they're great quality and only around £4. A recent favourite is the Intense Kisses lip gloss. At just £2 it's comparable to Rimmel Apocalips, but easier to wear and less messy!

Derma V10 Cocoa Body Butter

I must admit I'm a little bit lazy when it comes to body moisturising. I buy a new product and start out with good intentions, but they soon fade either when the product doesn't live up to expectations or I just get bored of it. But not with this one. I tried it after Miss Budget Beauty's recommendation and have repurchased several times since then. For just 99p (I get mine from Body Care, but apparently you can get it in Poundland and 99p stores too) you get a decent 220ml tub of bright orange body butter. Yup, bright orange! But as soon as you rub it into your skin you get a rich, gorgeous smelling, moisturising lotion that really packs a punch. The scent lingers on your skin, but doesn't smell fake or too sickly and makes my skin really soft and smooth. My only reservation is the colour, but with a product this good I can overlook that. If you're a fan of the much pricier Body Shop body butters, give this a go. I promise you wont regret it!

Superdrug Vitamin E Range

I first tried the vitamin e range from Superdrug after the huge hype the Hot Cloth Cleanser caused in the blogosphere when it launched. I fell in love with it and have been using it ever since. I'm happy to report the rest of the range is just as good! Most recently I've been using the Facial Scrub and Oil and they're both products I love. The scrub is oat based, and while I usually find these aren't 'scrubby' enough for me, the exfoliating particles in this have just the right texture. Since I purchased the oil a few weeks ago I have used it every single night before bed and the difference it has made to my dry skin is incredible. My skin feels so much brighter and smoother, my make-up goes on so much easier and even the dark shadows under my eyes are less noticable. And for under £3!

Ebay

Not a budget beauty buy as such, but definitely worth noting if you're after a bargain! I like going in store and having a browse, but online shopping can be just as satisfying, especially if you know what you're looking for. I recently got a brand new Maybelline Color Tattoo eyeshadow on ebay for around £3.80 + free delivery, when the exact same product in Boots or Superdrug would have set me back £4.99. Ok, so there are often 3 for 2 offers or discounts, and points to collect in store, but if you're just looking for one thing and don't want to be tempted then see if you can find it on Ebay first! Other things I have picked up are a Rimmel Moisture Renew lipstick in Berry Queen for under £2 and a couple of Sleek eye palettes for much lower than the RRP.

Off-Topic Tuesday - The Autumn Tag

Well, Autumn is well and truly here and I can't say I mind. I love summer, but I was looking forward to getting my cosy jumpers out and putting away the bronzer for another year! I saw this tag on MakeupSavvy (one of my favourite non-polish blogs, although Fee does do a wicked NOTD too!) and thought I'd join in before we descend into winter proper.

1. Favourite thing about Autumn? 

I think it's the colours. The complete change from fresh and green to crisp yellows, reds and oranges can be breathtaking at times. I also love the crisp, crunchy new season apples. And of course the excuse to get the vampy, autumn polishes out!

2. Favourite drink? 

I do love my coffee, but even though I'm constantly dieting I have a thing for listening to the rain with a hot chocolate, even f it is a low cal one.

3. Favourite scent/candle? 

I'm getting into my Yankee Candles again, and I'm loving November Rain. It's airy and fresh, and really calming. I'm also loving their new Salted Caramel, but it makes me hungry!

4. Best lipstick? 

This is hard. My most recent lipstick purchase has been Revlon Lip Butter in Wild Watermelon, which is a lovely red but not very autumnal! I'm planning on hunting down a berry-toned lipstick or two as I have a few berry-ish glosses but am favouring lipstick at the moment, so if you have any suggestions let me know!

5. Go to moisturiser? 

My skin is a little dry and I'm starting to see some signs of ageing (how very dare you, fine lines) so my skin is drinking up Superdrug Vitamin E Intense Moisture Cream (cheap and cheerful at £2.99!)

6. Go to colours for the eyes? 

I'm going from a simple flick of liquid liner to using taupes and shimmery nudes on my eyes as the season changes, and I've just ordered a couple of metallic Maybelline Colour Tattoo cream eyeshadows that I can't wait to play with.

7. Favourite music or band/singer to listen to? 

I'm loving London Grammar's Strong at the moment. The lead singer Hannah Reid has a beautifully haunting voice that gives me shimmers. And I must confess I kinda like Miley Cyrus's new song, although why she has to lick everything I'll never know...

8. Favourite outfit to wear (i.e. boots & a scarf combo)? 

Coloured skinny jeans and boots, with a cosy jumper or cardigan. Although I did just buy some new tights in different colours so I'll have to expand my dress/skirt collection to match I think!

9. Autumn treat? 

There's an owl print scarf I've got my eye on, as I love anything owl! 

10. Favourite place to be? 

Wrapped up in layers, coat, scarf, gloves and boots walking on Dunstable Downs or by the River Ouse with my boys, and a hot, sweet coffee to warm up afterwards.

I gave my nails a break and kept on my blue mani for an extra day, so today I have my October favourites for you. I didn't buy an awful lot this month, due to being penniless! So there are just a few bits that I've picked up or rediscovered that I'm loving.

Brunette eyebrow pencil by Vital Radiance, Beauty UK Pearl Eyeliner in Eclipse, Garnier BB Cream in Light, Rose and Co Apothecary Rose Petal Salve

I always used to use a matte eyeshadow to fill my eyebrows when I needed it - which wasn't very often - but I saw this eyebrow pencil in Poundland and thought I'd try it. Now I know what a difference it can make to "do" your eyebrows. It makes my whole face look more defined and really frames my eyes.I don't do it everyday, but when I'm doing my "full face" or a strong eye it completes the look.

I now have 5 of Beauty UK's pearl eyeliners and can't recommend them enough. I got Eclipse as an "extra" from a blog sale and love it. It's a very dark slate grey and is great for lining a smokey eye.

I wasn't sure about buying a BB cream from Garnier - at £9.99 it's a lot more than I'd usually pay for foundation or tinted moisturiser, so I sent off for a sample to try it. The first time I used it I used way too much and ended up super shiny and felt like my make-up was sliding around my face all day. The next time I made sure I used it over primer and didn't use as much and it was much better. Somewhere in between a foundation and tinted moisturiser is perfect coverage for me as I have good skin and barely ever get spots, but have a few uneven patches of colouration and freckles. I'm still not sure if I would buy this for a tenner, but it's on offer in Tesco at the moment for £8, or I might try 17's one for £5.99 next time I'm in Boots.

I got the Rose and Co Apothecary Rose Petal Salve in my October Boudoir Prive box and it is fast replacing my Lemony Flutter as my favourite cuticle treatment. It doesn't have the grainy texture of lemony flutter and turns into more of an oil on the skin. I even use this on my lips (I do this with Lemony Flutter too). I wasn't sure if the scent would put me off but it just reminds me of Turkish Delight. I'm not a great fan of Turkish Delight, but it's bearable! And makes my lips feel great. I want to try their Cherry Salve too, but I will wait until I've finished this one and the Lemony Flutter (which I feel is never gonna happen since it's HUGE!)

L'Occitiane Shea Hand Cream Hibiscus Flower, Original Shea, Desert Rose, Kleenex Facial Cleansing Wipes

Last month in Marie Claire they were giving away a L'Occitiane Shea Hand Cream in four different "flavours" (am I the only one who calls scents and varieties of beauty products "flavours"? You wouldn't eat it...). I picked up the original shea butter first, and when I used it almost all up within 2 weeks I picked up two more! Yes, I bought 3 copies of the same magazine...and still haven't read it! I can honestly say that it's the best hand cream I've ever used and my hands and nails have felt so much better, especially now the weather is getting cold - which is tough on my hands. If I don't get a huge bucket of this stuff under the Chrimbo tree I will be buying one in the new year!

I am a facial wipe fan, and these ones from Kleenex are really good. Apparently Kleenex as a company started as a way for women to remove make-up, so their new range is going back to their roots. These wipes are soft and quilted, so they're strong and don't make my skin feel dry and I don't feel like I have to scrub at my eyes to get my mascara off!

So, there are my faves of the month. I am on a self imposed spending ban so Novembers favourites will be things I'm rediscovering and digging out from the stash! The spending ban wont be too hard I think, there are only 2 polishes that I think I want (Barry M's Croc Effect crackle and the green/gold one from the Models Own Beetlejuice collection) but I can hold off on those since I don't have a place for them in my 31 day challenge! And then December will be all about Christmas, so maybe my faves for that month will come from Mr Claus!

What have you been loving this month? I tell you I'm not loving this cold weather! Am avoiding putting the heating on for as long as possible...it's chilly in here I tell you!

NOTD - 17 Magnetised in Grey

Hi loves!

Sorry my posts are a bit sporadic at the moment, technology hates me. I usually bluetooth pics from my camera to my laptop as the cable stopped working, but now the bluetooth on my laptop has stopped working too. So, I was bluetoothing the pics from my camera to my phone, and then uploading to my laptop from there. BUT now the cable for my phone has stopped working too. It charges my phone, but it wont send data. Grr. So now, I'm bluetoothing photos from camera to phone, and then emailing them to myself to get them on the computer. Can you say long-winded? What's worse is that the emails take FOREVAH to come through. I'm writing this post at 4.30pm and I emailed myself the pictures at 11pm last night and they're still not here (Actually now about 47 hours ago and they're still not here...nicked the BF's lappy, then emailed myself from there. LeSigh.). I have ordered a new bluetooth dongle for the lappy, and as soon as it arrives normal service will be resumed!

Anywho, I have the Grey Boots 17 magnetised polish to show you today. This and the green are my favourite, followed closely by the purple Nails Inc one. The blue 17 one is pretty enough, but was a bit trickier formula wise, and gave a more subtle effect. I'll wear it again soon to show you. I desperately want the red one from FashionistA, and a little birdie tells me they'll be in selected Superdrugs from Wednesday, and hopefully on the Superdrug website Monday or Tuesday. Plus, Superdrug has free delivery until Christmas, so although their website is a bit rubbish it's worth a look!

I held the magnet the other way round for this manicure, giving me vertical stripes instead of horizontal, and I think it makes my nails look long and elegant. This is one coat over one coat of Collection2000 Hot Looks All That Jazz, which matches almost perfectly (there's a swatch of that too). I really love the effect this polish gives, it really looks three dimensional! I think I need a brown/bronze one of these, it'd look just like a tigers eye stone - amazeballs!

NOTD - OPI I Lily Love You over 2true Shade 10 Navy Creme

Bonjour!

Today I'm showing you a really pretty combination that I wore for my sons 4th birthday over the weekend. I used 2 coats of one of 2true's new Colour Quick Fast Dry polishes in Shade 10 (Navy Creme - how hard is it to name a polish?). I wanted a navy creme and I saw this colour on Just Nice Things and knew I wanted it. I also knew it stained so I used 2 coats of base coat and minimised the damage. I then layered a coat of OPI I Lily Love You on top for maximum prettyfuls. Sealed with topcoat (NYC Expert Last in Classy Glassy as I couldn't get the fast dry. Still as good IMO, but I will be getting a new Seche in the near future).

These pics do not do it justice, everyone come over to my house and see for yourself. No, actually don't...

Wee bit o' tipwear showing, but considering I usually have chips and all sorts after a day of wear I can' handle it.

I can see this navy polish getting a lot of use this autumn/winter, and 2true products sell for the bargainous price of £1.99 or three for a fiver in Superdrug. I picked up two new foil polishes too. I'm glad to see new things from 2true, as it hopefully means Superdrug wont be discontinuing it anytime soon. They apply well, the brush is good and they're cheap and cheerful. What else could a girl want?

July Favourites!

So, it's August already! Summer is nearly over, and I never thought I would say this but September can't come quick enough! My little boy has only been off school just short of 2 weeks and already he's driving me bonkers. I lost count of the number of times he got sent to his room or put on the naughty step today, once for messing with a load of my makeup and spilling a load of glitter I was saving for a franken on the stair carpet. Little monkey had dragged the coffee table across the room to stand on to reach it while I was getting the baby to sleep. Argh! It's been one of those days...

Anyway, onto products I've loved this month.

First, of course, the polishes and nail products. I reviewed my current favorite polish remover here, so here are the rest of my current loves.

Now, some make-up. Everyone's been talking about the MUA Pro Heaven and Earth palette, and I can see why. So versatile, from quick go-to everyday looks to a glam smokey eye, you can use this palette for everything! Next is another W7 product, their Africa Bronzer. I love the design of this bronzer (notice the not-so-subtle Benefit inspiration?), but it is rather shimmery so works best as a highlight or used sparingly! Bronzer is my number 2 desert island product, after mascara, so I had to try 17 Falsifeye and love it too. My lashes are short and thin, so anything that promises length and volume and does what it says on the tin is good in my book. And also this month, I searched for a corla lipglass, and found two I love. Rimmel Vinyl Gloss in 290 Be Famous and Beauty UK Lip Lust in No. 9 Cocktail

Finally, some bath/body products. I've not been using the hot cloth cleanser from Superdrug for long but I already love it. It removes make-up easily and is gentle on the eye area, smells good and makes my skin feel great. I use it in conjunction with this Witch exfoliating face wash, which leaves my skin smooth and soft and isn't drying. I love Lush products but usually go for the bath bombs for a treat. I decided to get this shower jelly because I can never find a shower gel that I love the smell of - I prefer fruity to floral or aromatic - and this Sweetie Pie shower jelly smells of blackberries and cassis and I could literally eat it! You only need a really small amount too. And finally, my shampoo of the moment - Aussie Aussome Volume. I'm never usually loyal to haircare products, buying whatever's on offer or what takes my fancy. I find that shampoos that work great to start with soon lose their powers, but this one hasn't and I'll definitely be repurchasing when I run out.

Bargain Haulage

I'm sorry this post is later than I planned, for some reason the weekend went too fast and time was not on my side.

Anyway, I've been bargain/freebie hunting and this is what I've come up with!

First up, some freebies. In Boots at the moment when you buy two Dove Deodorants you get a free Nails Inc Nail Polish in either Copacabana (coral creme) or Havana (nude shimmer). I spent just under £8 on the deodorant (which is the brand I use anyway so they'll get used up) and got both polishes, worth £22 together. I have Copacabana on my toes at the moment, and it is more orange than it looks in the bottle.

Also in Boots, when you buy any two 17 products you get this mini nail bar in a bag free, containing two polishes, a nail file and some nail stickers. The polishes are Pink Grapefruit and Red something (which I already had but had gone rock solid!) I bought a polish in Peacock and a high shine lip gloss in Coral Queen to get this freebie, spending less than £7.50. I wanted a coral lipgloss anyway, but will have to keep looking as this one is just completely sheer :(

Now an ebay bargain, I was looking for a particular Collection 2000 colour tat is apparently good for stamping, but has been discontinued. I couldn't find the one I was looking for, but the orangey-coral polish in this set caught my eye. There was 30 minutes or so left in the auction, it had no bids with a start price of 99p + £2 postage so I bid £1.20 and won. The pink isn't really very me, but the other two are nice enough, and I wanted an orange shimmer as my few orange polishes are all cremes.

These 2 Barry M beauties are Peach Melba and Berry Ice Cream, which I got from the Barry M Website with a code for 15% off. With postage I paid a little more than you would in Boots or Superdrug, but I can never seem to find Peach Melba and there aren't any offers in either shop at the moment, so I went for it. After all, you can't beat a bit of Barry M :)

Saturday Randomness - What's in my bag...

Because I don't have a nail post for you today (still rocking the splatter for a few more hours until I change them for my night out) and I'm bored I decided to show you what's in my bag. I've seen a couple of these posts, in video and photo form, and the inner peeping tom in me loves it. Now, I know you're thinking, hang on, she's got kids isn't her bag going to be full of nappies, squashed bananas and crumbs? Well, yes, my big bag is. Nappies, wipes, bum cream, spare clothes, hand sanitiser, juice, biscuits, toys, 11tybillion spare dummies, several different fruits in various stages of 'squashed' you get the picture. But I have a separate bag for my everyday things - I don't need to take the big bag for the school run or nipping to the shops so I downsized recently and got my own handbag back! And it's not big enough for a banana, squashed or otherwise...

First the bag itself. I got it at Tesco fairly recently for £5. I'm on a bit of a floral kick at the moment, and have had a few compliments on it so it must be ok! The strap is pleather and adjustable but I have it as long as it will go so I can wear it across my body and be hands free.

Now for what's inside...

Purse, a Christmas gift a few years ago. I have a bag to match which is a lot bigger so I use it more for going out for the day. Keys. Actually, key and rather a lot of keyrings. Phone headphones (I have a Samsung Galaxy S and it is sexy. It's usually in here too but I couldn't take pictures of it because I was using the camera on it...) Chewing gum, spearmint only please. Tissues. Folding hairbrush. Lipstick and gloss. Mouth ulcer pastiles because for some reason my mouth is full of them at the moment.

Folding hairbrush with mirror, £1.49 from Superdrug. Deep pinky red lipstick from Bourgois. It also has a handy mirror on the cap. This is really sheer and more like a tinted balm, which is perfect for me. They call it a lipshine and the shade is 07 Rose Parero. Barry M clear sparkly lipgloss, which I got in a pack with an Impulse bodyspray. It doesn't have a name on the tube, but is just clear with sparkles. Great for layering over lipstick or on it's own if you need a bit of moisture. I switch the lippie and gloss with a few others quite regularly, but these are my faves at the moment

So that's it. Not a lot of stuff in there really, and I should really fling an emery board in to stop me having to frantically rub my nails against my flies every time I get a snag and looking like a pervert...

NOTD - MUA Shade 13 + Barry M Silver Cascade

Well, I haven't broken my hand (much to my OH's delight, he wont have to take over household stuff for much longer), I've bruised and stretched the ligaments, apparently. All I know is that it hurts. A lot. Seriously, don't have kids.

Anyway, I managed to paint my nails Friday night, and tried out MUA. MUA is a brand available exclusively at Superdrug and all of their main range products are £1. What do you get for a quid these days? Well, in this case you get a fab quality product. I have a couple of eyeshadows from the range and they are quickly becoming staples, and this polish is a thing of beauty. They also have a Pro-range slowly launching in Superdrug, including crackle polish, but more of that later ;)

For this mani I used 3 coats of MUA shade 13 and added an accent nail of 2 coats of Barry M Silver Cascade (which apparently is a very close sister to O.P.I Mad As A Hatter), I could have gotten away with 2 coats of the MUA but it was such a dream to apply I carried on and with my claw-hand I just wanted to make sure it was perfect. I honestly could not fault this polish! Brush: good. Formula: good. Colour: goooood! Topped with a quick coat of NYC, and Seche for the glitter because it's gritty and I was good to go.

Please excuse the swollen sausage fingers and claw hand. I can't hold a polish bottle well enough for pics, so here's a bottle shot first.

Then since it survived my trip to A&E with no sign of chipping/tipwear I mattefied it and made it look all satiny. All together now - ooooh!

You know when they show repeats of the Christmas episodes of The Simpsons in June Yeah...

So what do you think? Have you tried MUA? Will you be hunting down their pro range? I went into Superdrug yesterday to look for it, but there wasn't a display anywhere and it was only when I was at the till that I spotted a teeny rack of MUA Pro nail polish. I asked the assistant if there was any more of the range anywhere and she said not yet. On closer inspection I realised the polishes were exactly what I was looking for - their crackles! I grabbed the purple, (trying not to dribble) and paid for it with glee! I was desperate for purple crackle ever sinve Models Own announced they were releasing one, but sorry Models Own, you just weren't quick (or cheap) enough! I did a quick tester and it's fab! Look out for a post on it coming soon, just have to decide what to layer it over. I'm thinking silver or gold...any suggestions?

Haul - the holo hunt is over...for now...

I have been very restrained over the last few weeks. My last haul was on the 7th of May and until last week I hadn't bought any polish. I was aiming to not buy any until the wedding I went to was over, and I only bought two polishes before then. And I only did then to try and get a good silver stamping polish for the wedding, and the Miss Sporty polishes were on offer so I couldn't pass the other one up! Then, since I didn't spend as much as I thought over the weekend I treated myself over Monday and Tuesday and this is what I found.

And the holo, in all it's glory. Sure, it's no GOSH holographic, but it's a linear holo and I lurve it. It's was £7.50 from M&S.

I wore it for a day travelling so didn't get any pictures, but I will wear it again soon!

This weekend I'm going on a hunt for the MUA crackles, and more Miss Sporty since they're two for £1.99 in Superdrug (I can't believe I've lost my Superdrug Beauty Card already *headdesk*) and I want to see which ones are good for stamping. Then I might possibly make a small china glaze order (just saw Lubu Heels swatched, OMGeez) and then calm down again! Although, apart from M&S Rainbow, none of the polishes cost more than £3, so I haven't been tooo naughty.....

NOTD - Revlon Strawberry Electric + 17 Nail Xtras Gold Crackle

Instead of going for black crackle over yesterdays pink, I decided to give the gold another try and let it redeem itself, and I'm glad I did! I was disappointed in the gold crackle from 17 before, as it didn't seem to crack very much and even over dark colours looked a bit, well, rubbish. But over this pink it looks amazing, still didn't crack as much as the Barry M ones (in fact on the right hand where I am not so skilled and applied a slightly thicker coat, the cracks are bigger so that may be the key), but I love the effect I got.

Apparently MUA at Superdrug have released a shatter line, including a purple, so instead of waiting an age for Models Own to release their purple crackle, or dishing out on the China Glaze one I feel a trip to Superdrug coming on...
