Off topic Tuesday - Sleek Pomegranate Blush review

Hi!

I have a Sleek Blush to share with you today. I'm a big fan of Sleek eyeshadows, and I've recently picked up a couple of blushes to try too, and have been really impressed. The pigmentation is great, they have just the right amount of shimmer and are really bleandable. Pomegranate is a berry toned blush that's perfect for that winter flush. The packaging is, well, sleek and the product comes in matte black casing with a handy mirror in the lid. When you open it, the texture of the blush looks like velvet, and it feels just as soft. Overall, I'm really impressed with Pomegranate, and it's made its way into my regular winter make up routine.

Blended on left and stronger on right

Excuse the frizzy green hair - post on that coming up!
I purchased this blush from Superdrug priced £4.49. Bargain!

Do you own any Sleek products? Would you recommend any?

Off-Topic Tuesday - Collection Does It All 5 in 1 mascara review

Hi!

Off topic Tuesday today sees my first mascara review! Mascara is my desert island make-up item - if I could only have one make-up product, mascara would be it, and it may even be this one! Collection Does It All promises 5 benefits in one product - curling, volumizing, lengthening, long-wearing and conditioning.

As soon as I opened the tube I knew this mascara and I would be friends. For me, the brush on this product is perfect; short, rubber bristles that go right around the tip of the brush to ensure you can really work the product into all of your lashes. Added to the formula (which really seems to curl, lengthen and volumise as promised) really opens up my eyes without clumping or giving me spider-leg lashes. And boy is it long lasting! Maybe a bit too much as it can be a nuisance to remove! I usually use Nivea Daily Essentials Gentle Eye Make Up Remover to take off my eye make up, and then follow with Superdrug Vitamin E Hot Cloth Cleanser to get the remains of my mascara off and to cleanse my face, but with this I really have to scrub at my lashes to get them clean. I'm sure a good oil based cleanser would help, but if you don't get on with those then you might struggle. It does stay put all day without flaking though.

Now there is perhaps one thing that would make me think twice about taking this to my desert island (if only...). The day after I took these photos I went to use it and when I pulled out the wand it was COVERED in the product. I think inside the opening to the tube there must be a ring of some sort designed to scrape off the excess product which must have come off and fallen inside! I'm going to take it back and ask if I can exchange it, and hopefully the same wont happen again because I really do like it!

Collection Does It All 5 in 1 mascara is available in Black and Ultra Black (I went for Ultra Black. Rawr) for £4.99 where ever Collection Cosmetics are found - which is more or less everywhere!

Off Topic Tuesday - 5 days, 5 faces!

Hi all!

Last week in one of the Facebook beauty groups I belong to, we had a little challenge amongst ourselves to create a different themed look each day. I really enjoyed it, and it got me thinking about how I used my make-up. I don't have a huge stash but it isn't small by any means, but I found coming up with each look really stretched my boundaries and made me step out of my comfort zone. I thought I'd share each day with you, too!

Monday!

Here's my monday look, a simple liquid eye liner and red lip combo.

Tuesday!

On Tuesday we were challenged with Autumnal orange look. This was my least favourite look of the week, but I used my neglected Sleek Sunset palette and I've used it since so silver lining!

Wednesday!

Wednesday's look was girly green, and I went for an olive eye shadow to match my jumper (sorry the lighting sucked! It was dark as doomsday!)

Thursday!

The brief for Thursday was a burgundy/plum smokey eye and I used Maybelline Color Tattoo in Pomegranite (a blogger fave!) When I've worn it before it's make my eyes sore, but it wasn't too bad this time so hopefully I'll get to wear it more.

Friday!

Friday's theme was Glitz and Glam. I didn't glitz it up too much because of work, but went for a classy shimmery grey eye with winged liner, and burgundy lips.

It was a fun week, and it made a change from the same old nudes everyday! It also made me want to increase my blusher collection, which is dangerous!

Off-topic Tuesday - Avon Best and Worst

Hi guys!

Today I'm going to share with you my thoughts on some Avon products. If you're not familiar with the brand then you can order online, but the traditional way to order is through a representative who would bring a brochure to your home or workplace and collect it a few days later with your order and then return with your products a few weeks after that. Years and years ago I was an Avon rep for a while, but I stopped around 8 years ago and all of the products I'm showing you today were purchased with my own money, and I'm not earning commission or anything from this post. Now that's out of the way let's take a look!

Firstly, I have to say my experience with the brand has been hit and miss. Some products I've loved and I use daily, others not so much and have been relegated to the back of the pile. But I guess as you're essentially "buying blind" from a catalogue that's to be expected. Secondly, NEVER pay full price for an Avon product! Seriously, if there isn't some kind of offer on a product you want in the current campaign brochure, the chances are there will be next time! Also, the offers in the brochures aren't always on the website, so find your nearest rep and order through them if you can (you can find a rep through the website.)

Left to right: Advance Techniques Colour Protection Anti-Fade UV Spray and Lock-In Treatment, Soloutions HydraBeyond Eye Gel, Angled eyeliner brush and angled blusher brush, Nail Polishes and stickers, Plump Pout in Nude Pout

I've tried quite a few hair treatments from Avon over the years, and these two are my current favourite. The anti-fade UV spray was a godsend in the summer months with my coloured hair, as the sun can be a huge culprit in colour fading, especially on red hair. Using this I felt like I was adding another step into protecting my colour and it was lightweight and non greasy - hugely important to me as my hair is very fine and gets weighed down by a lot of products. The Lock-In treatment claims to work differently - by preventing colour wash out. I don't know if this is the case but it's a nice leave in conditioner that really helped soften and detangle my hair in the weeks after I'd bleached and coloured it.

I bought the HydraBeyond Eye Gel along with a day cream from the same range, but only the eye gel makes it to my hit list. It is cooling and light, not sticky and doesn't sting when I inevitably get it in my actual eye! At the age of 31 I can see fine lines developing and when I use this my concealer settles into these lines less, so I hope that means something!

The brushes I use daily, and would not hesitate to replace them if I ever needed to. But I can't see that happening unless I lost them as they wash really well and have never lost their shape. The blush brush is perfect for contouring or just slapping a bit of colour on as it is soft yet perfectly shaped. I thought the eyeliner brush would make a good nail clean up brush, but I tried it for gel eyeliner and fell in love. Can't recommend them enough!

The Plump Pout is another tingly lipgloss, and a good one! I have said before that I love a tingly gloss and this one is tingly without being a cinnamon-fest! I reach for it usually when I've done a smokey eye and I want a nude but shiny lip to go with it. It's not too sticky for a gloss, has a lovely shine but doesn't last very long - I need to reapply after the school run.

Naileymabobs! Avon have a few different ranges of nail polish and I've never found one I didn't at least like. The Speed Dry range tend to be a little thick (and therefore bubbly) but they have great colours (Sprightly Mint, above, is a dead on dupe for Essie Absolutely Shore). The Nailwear pro range do have a lasting formula, and have some really pretty shimmers. The Colourtrend range, aimed at teenagers really, are really on trend and have duochromes, jelly-glitters, and these fabulous glitter toppers that I adore (the purple is a dupe for Picture Polish Gene Doll!). They have also just launched a range of nail wraps, and although I haven't  tried them yet, if they're as good as these cute leopard tip stickers I'll look forward to trying them!

Left to right: Advance Techniques Strengthen and Protect Shampo and conditioner, Sleep Therapy Pillow Spray, Various Lip Products, Solutions HydraBeyond Hydrating Day Cream.

Then we have the bad. Some of these products aren't awful, they just don't do what I wanted them to do. The strengthening shampoo and conditioner are nice enough and have a lovely minty smell, but I didn't see a reduction in how much breakage I get with my hair and I found it weighs it down.

The sleep therapy pillow spray is a great idea, but Avon just don't get it quite right. The scent is too peppery and the spray isn't fine enough so you end up with a wet pillow! It is useful however, as a bracelet stand...

Next, is a plethora of lip products! I do love a lippie but generally I'm disappointed when it's from Avon. They quite often have funny smells, or are very drying. The colour quite often turns out very different to the swatch in the brochure too. Saying that I have another one on it's way to me so hopefully I'll like it! I actually really like the Shine Attract lipstick (the silver bullet with the lid off in the picture) - it has a colour core surrounded by a balm and gives a really lovely sweep of colour, but after a few uses I found a sharp piece of something in the balm part! And by found I mean sliced my lip open on it! So it had to go into the misses...

While I like the HydraBeyond eye gel, I don't like the accompanying day cream. First off, it isn't a cream, it's a gel. When I first tried it I found it way too sticky, like it leaves a film on your skin and doesn't soak in. For that reason I don't feel like it's doing anything for my skin. Also, it makes foundation impossible to blend and patchy. I was surprised that a moisturiser marketed for dryer skin would have a sticky finish to it, and whenever I decide to give it another go I regret it all day!

One other thing that has to go into the misses is the brochure itself, or rather the swatches within it. I know it's difficult to tell colours from a print magazine, but they really are awful - too small and not at all colour accurate. Most of the lip products I have bought from the brochure have been different to what I was expecting, and although I'd really like to try the cream to powder foundation I daren't as I have no idea which shade to try!

So, there are my Avon hits and misses. Do you have any recommendations of things I should try, or avoid? Let me know!

Off-Topic Tuesday - The Autumn Tag

Well, Autumn is well and truly here and I can't say I mind. I love summer, but I was looking forward to getting my cosy jumpers out and putting away the bronzer for another year! I saw this tag on MakeupSavvy (one of my favourite non-polish blogs, although Fee does do a wicked NOTD too!) and thought I'd join in before we descend into winter proper.

1. Favourite thing about Autumn?
I think it's the colours. The complete change from fresh and green to crisp yellows, reds and oranges can be breathtaking at times. I also love the crisp, crunchy new season apples. And of course the excuse to get the vampy, autumn polishes out!

2. Favourite drink?
I do love my coffee, but even though I'm constantly dieting I have a thing for listening to the rain with a hot chocolate, even f it is a low cal one.

3. Favourite scent/candle?
I'm getting into my Yankee Candles again, and I'm loving November Rain. It's airy and fresh, and really calming. I'm also loving their new Salted Caramel, but it makes me hungry!

4. Best lipstick?
This is hard. My most recent lipstick purchase has been Revlon Lip Butter in Wild Watermelon, which is a lovely red but not very autumnal! I'm planning on hunting down a berry-toned lipstick or two as I have a few berry-ish glosses but am favouring lipstick at the moment, so if you have any suggestions let me know!

5. Go to moisturiser?
My skin is a little dry and I'm starting to see some signs of ageing (how very dare you, fine lines) so my skin is drinking up Superdrug Vitamin E Intense Moisture Cream (cheap and cheerful at £2.99!)

6. Go to colours for the eyes?
I'm going from a simple flick of liquid liner to using taupes and shimmery nudes on my eyes as the season changes, and I've just ordered a couple of metallic Maybelline Colour Tattoo cream eyeshadows that I can't wait to play with.

7. Favourite music or band/singer to listen to?
I'm loving London Grammar's Strong at the moment. The lead singer Hannah Reid has a beautifully haunting voice that gives me shimmers. And I must confess I kinda like Miley Cyrus's new song, although why she has to lick everything I'll never know...

8. Favourite outfit to wear (i.e. boots & a scarf combo)?
Coloured skinny jeans and boots, with a cosy jumper or cardigan. Although I did just buy some new tights in different colours so I'll have to expand my dress/skirt collection to match I think!

9. Autumn treat?
There's an owl print scarf I've got my eye on, as I love anything owl!

10. Favourite place to be?
Wrapped up in layers, coat, scarf, gloves and boots walking on Dunstable Downs or by the River Ouse with my boys, and a hot, sweet coffee to warm up afterwards.

I tag anyone who wants to join in! And let me know if you do, I'm nosey!
